The first is the rise of liquid detergents in Western countries, led by the almost complete shift in the US market from powder to liquid.

The second is the growth of powder detergents in expanding markets such as Africa, India, China, Latin America and throughout the developing world.

Powder detergent also continues to play an important role in highly developed markets such as Western Europe, thanks to its whitening and sanitising properties.

Approximately 15 million metric tonnes of powder detergent were sold worldwide in 2019, twice the volume of liquid detergent. Powder detergent continues to dominate the global market, and its use keeps growing across developing countries.
In the manufacture of powder detergents, the key surfactant used in formulations is linear alkylbenzene sulfonate, known as LAS. It is a relatively inexpensive ingredient and highly effective at removing dirt, although comparatively less effective against grease stains. As a result, the powder detergent industry continues to face challenges in cleaning performance.

For this reason, most detergents contain builders, which help increase the cleaning power of surfactants and bleaching agents. Phosphates have traditionally been the main builders used. However, phosphates are being phased out of conventional detergents because they promote excessive plant and algae growth in lakes and rivers, a highly harmful phenomenon known as eutrophication.
To address this issue, less efficient alternatives such as sodium carbonate, layered silicates and zeolites have had to be used. These materials reduce water hardness by removing calcium and magnesium ions.

The boosters developed by ACRILATOS are an ideal solution for increasing performance while keeping costs low in the highly competitive powder detergent market. They achieve this in the following ways:

Improving the removal of enzymatic stains: Thanks to their pH buffering capacity, which keeps pH within the optimal range, ACRILATOS Boosters work effectively as enzyme stabilisers.

Improving the removal of oxidisable stains: Thanks to the excellent metal-chelating properties of ACRILATOS Boosters, which help bind metal ions such as iron, manganese and cobalt, among others, that can contribute to the decomposition of bleaching agents.

Improving the removal of grease stains: By protecting surfactants from the presence of calcium and magnesium ions, extending surfactant activity in the wash bath and improving overall cleaning efficiency.

The powder detergent industry remains in very good shape and still faces many challenges. ACRILATOS focuses on these challenges and aims to support its customers in continuously improving their products.

There are two clear trends in the global laundry detergent market.
